A bit of history: In Spain and Latin America, "Una Peña" is a communal gathering space or social club where people unite around a shared passion for arts, food, or community activism. In countries like Argentina, Chile, and Peru, a peña (often called La Peña) is an intimate, participatory folk music event. Communities gather in informal venues to listen to traditional acoustic music, dance, and share regional food and wine. Unlike standard concerts, audience participation is highly encouraged. In the 1960s and 1970s, peñas served as vital underground spaces for resistance and Nueva Canción (New Song) movements, where locals could discuss social justice and grassroots politics away from oppressive regimes. In Spain, a "Peña Flamenca" can be found throughout Andalucía and are dedicated to preserving and celebrating flamenco. During the Franco regime in Spain, Peñas Flamencas happened behind closed doors and in secret gatherings, often under government surveillance. While Franco's regime officially co-opted sanitized flamenco as a national tourist attraction, authentic, unfiltered gatherings were heavily repressed as subversive cultural dissent.
We honor the cultural history and importance of these spaces. "La Peña Cultural" is an expression of culture, identity and resilience. We encourage you to be loud and celebratory throughout the show as we honor the hard work and cultural vibrancy of our youth and community.

ABQ Spoken Word Poetry Featuring: The Last Poets Hosted by Hakim Bellamy; Music by Terminator X (of Public Enemy)
Presented by DSH Entertainment, Inc.
When
Where
Description
Even before rap became famous, The Last Poets were creating music and poetry that spoke about real-life problems. The Last Poets are legendary American spoken word artists, poets, and musicians widely recognized as the Forefathers of hip-hop. Formed in Harlem, New York in the late 1960s, The Last Poets emerged during a time of intense social and political change in America, boldly addressing racism, poverty, systemic injustice, and African American empowerment through rhythm-driven poetry.
Their impact on conscious rap, political hip-hop, and modern spoken word culture remains profound and globally respected. People call them the forefathers of hip-hop because they inspired the first rap artists. Their words were strong, honest, and full of meaning. They showed that poetry and music could be used to teach, inspire, and bring change.
The Last Poets gained national attention through their groundbreaking recordings and live performances across the United States. Their self-titled debut album became a landmark release, influencing generations of artists who would later define hip-hop and conscious rap.
Providing music for the event is none other than DJ Terminator X: One of Hip-Hop's Most Legendary DJs:
If you love hip-hop music, then you have definitely heard the beats and sounds that made the genre what it is today. But behind every great rap group, there is always a great DJ. And when we talk about one of the best DJs in hip-hop history, one name that always comes up is DJ Terminator X. He is best known for being the official DJ of one of the biggest hip-hop groups ever - Public Enemy. If you have ever heard the song "Fight the Power or Bring the Noise," then you already know the power of Public Enemy's music, and behind all of that energy on stage and on record was DJ Terminator X, working the turntables and keeping the sound alive.
