Firefighter Saves a Man’s Life following a Motorcycle Crash

Mayor Richard J. Berry recognized on Friday an off-duty Albuquerque firefighter who saved a man’s life moments after he crashed his motorcycle. Lt. Toby Baca of Rescue 14 was named this week’s Friday’s Hero. Each week Mayor Richard J. Berry recognizes at least one public safety employee who goes above the call of duty.

Fire Chief Shapes His Command Staff

Albuquerque Fire Chief James Breen established his command staff Thursday by promoting 18 firefighters including two deputy chiefs. The promotions of David Downey and Tige Watson are Breen’s first deputy chief appointments in his administration. Two commanders, a captain, four lieutenants and seven drivers were also promoted Thursday in a ceremony at the Albuquerque Fire Academy.

Sept. 11th Key Note Address

On Sept. 10, 2010, City department employees and residents of Albuquerque gathered on Civic Plaza for our annual memorial and tribute. Chief Breen was selected as the key note speaker because of his heroic response to the Pentagon as a NM Task Force Rescue Squad Manager on Sept. 11th, 2001.

AFD Fleet Maintenance Workers Named City Employees of the Week

Jackson Hanawalt and Armando Gurule, both city employees with the Albuquerque Fire Department Fleet Maintenance Program, consistently go above and beyond the call of duty. They are being recognized for their efforts relating to a recent warehouse fire. On Wednesday, June 23, 2010, around 7:30 in the evening, a call came in regarding the fire that broke out at the warehouse.

AFD Fire Fighter's Save Teen From Raging Arroyo

At 3:00pm on July 28th, a 16 year old male was crossing the arroyo at Juan Tabo and Candelaria in Albuquerque, NM with minimal water visible. On his second step into the arroyo, an enormous gush of water knocked him off his feet and carried him west down the arroyo. A friend of his called 911 from the scene.

Receiving a medical call at a nursing home was nothing unusual for the crew of Engine 5. But on Thursday, July 15 there was nothing routine about the call they received to help a woman who was ill at a nursing home near Louisiana and Central NE.

Captain Marc Boisvert, Driver David Ortega, and Firefighter Joshua Jaramillo received this week’s Friday’s Heroes award. Each week Mayor Berry recognizes at least one public safety employee who goes above the call of duty.
