2019 93rd Lateral Cadet Class Requirements

The AFR 2019 93rd Lateral cadet class is an 8 week academy designed specifically for qualified, experienced firefighters and paramedics looking for better pay, benefits, tools, and retirement.

2019 93RD LATERAL CADET CLASS REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be 18 years of age by 1/30/19 (close of the Open Enrollment period)

  • IFSAC Firefighter I & II, IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations

  • Must possess a current NM State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license at the basic level or higher

  • Minimum one (1) year consecutive service with a paid fire department

  • Preferred Additional Specialty Certifications
    (Wildland, HTR, or Hazardous Materials)

  • Must be a United States Citizen or Legal Resident

  • Must possess a valid driver's license (out-of-state applicants must obtain a New Mexico driver's license within 30 days of being hired)

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class E New Mexico driver's license by 6/9/2019 (within 30 days from graduation of academy)

  • If applicants are not New Mexico Licensed but are Nationally Registered EMT Paramedics and are selected as cadets, they will be required to complete the reciprocity process and acquire a State of New Mexico EMT license by 05/10/19 (graduation from the academy)

  • Males under the age of 25 must be registered for Selective Service

TESTING

Physical Fitness

  • 1.5 mile run in under 14:24                                                                               
  • 3 pull-ups
  • 3 dips
  • 15 push-ups

Written Examination

  • 100 question multiple choice test to measure Firefighter I & II proficiency
  • 75% or greater to pass

General Firefighter Skills

  • Donning and doffing of SCBA and Bunker Gear
  • Ropes and knots skills test
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the following knots
    a. Figure Eight on a Bight
    b. Figure Eight Follow Through
    c. Bowline
    d. Clove Hitch

Oral Interview

  • Closed panel interview process
