The mission of the Albuquerque Fire Academy is to deliver a comprehensive
Fire Cadet training program that provides each recruit with the classroom
knowledge and practical skills necessary to function as a fire fighter/EMT,
and to support all AFD programs by conducting professional training for
all department personnel. Program training consists of all elements of the
International Fire Service Training Association and the curriculum of the
National Fire Academy, American Heart Association training, and State of
New Mexico Emergency Medical Services Bureau approved programs.
This training provides the minimum refresher and continuing education hours necessary to maintain current job qualifications. The goal is to ensure that all Department personnel maintain the base, core knowledge and practical skills needed to provide efficient, professional care and service to the citizens of Albuquerque.
The Academy also serves to assess and coordinate all new technical information that is disseminated to Department personnel. It tests new equipment and procedures, conducts annual fire company and individual performance evaluations, and oversees tactical, technical, and safety issues during major emergency incidents.
The Albuquerque Fire Academy is located at 11500 Sunset Gardens SW, on Albuquerque's west side. Completed in 1991, it sits on sixteen acres and includes a 13,500 square foot administration building that houses six classrooms, a library, a two-hundred-fifty seat auditorium, and offices for training and administration personnel. Other structures on the site include a burn building and a seven-story smoke and drill tower. The Academy physical plant also includes a water re-use pond, a pump house, and an apparatus building large enough for the storage of training equipment and fire apparatus.
