Finding Things To Do Will Get Easier With New Calendar!

Public Entities Join to Develop Comprehensive Calendar/Website

ALBUQUERQUE, NM—It will soon be easier than ever to check out upcoming events in the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County metro area. A new online comprehensive events calendar debuting in early 2014 is expected to become the premiere website for finding things to do in our community.

The development of the calendar and website is owed to collaboration among three of the metro area’s largest public entities: Bernalillo County, Popejoy Hall/University of New Mexico, and the City of Albuquerque, along with leadership from Creative Albuquerque. Collectively, this group produces and hosts several hundred events each year. To express their partnership in this project, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed recently by University of New Mexico President Robert Frank, Bernalillo County Manager Tom Zdunek and Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry.

"A comprehensive calendar will showcase all the wonderful live events and activities that the Albuquerque metro area has to offer to its residents and visitors, which make Albuquerque a great place to live and visit," said Thomas Tkach, director of Popejoy Hall, the premier performing arts center in New Mexico.

Although there are numerous sources for information on events and activities in the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County area, using that information generally involves accessing multiple specific websites or media outlets. This comprehensive calendar is intended to be a one-stop shopping guide that will include as much information as possible in one easy-to-access online location.

Access will be free for all users and for all individuals and organizations who wish to disseminate information on their activities. The calendar will offer greater dissemination of a wide range of information provided by anyone -- from individuals through small and large organizations, while reducing redundancy, simplifying data entry, and reducing administrative burdens. The new calendar also will support arts-and-culture-based economic development by event promotion, by increasing the visibility of the local creative community, and by supporting networking within that community and with other businesses and organizations. The website also will present information about opportunities such as classes, auditions, and performances to a much broader audience.

Since beginning discussions earlier this year, the project continues to gain support. Initial focus groups have been held with community representatives and a calendaring management solution has been selected. Launch is planned for early 2014.

As the project moves along, interested parties will have opportunities to provide input and to participate in the initiative through data submission, training and marketing. The project team will be in contact with a wide range of organizations regarding participating in the calendar, and will continue to update the community regarding progress.
