The New Mexico Jazz Festival makes a stop in Historic Old Town, and brings acclaimed jazz musicians with it.
- Jazz singer Catherine Russell was born to musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, a pioneering pianist, composer and bandleader, was Louis Armstrong’s long-time sidekick. She has worked as a back up singer for Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, and Rosanne Cash. Russell's debut album, Cat, was met with rave reviews. Her music has appeared on the Soundtrack Album for HBO’s show Boardwalk Empire, as well as on NPR’s The New Jazz Divas, and she sang in The Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival.
- Dan Dowling has enjoyed a career as a touring and recording musician and music educator since 1971. He has recorded four acclaimed CDs: Gila Detour (1992), Hide and Seek (2001), With Strings Attached (2010) and The Trailing Edge (2013). Dan resides in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he performs regularly in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and teaches both individual guitar lessons at Grumpy's Guitars. He also teaches jazz and blues improvisation classes for the New Mexico Jazz Workshop.
