From Spain to Jacona to Penasco. Growing up in Penasco.
Ignacio Roybal, progenitor of all southwestern Roybals, was recruited from Spain by Diego de Vargas to help re-conquer New Mexico after the Indian Revolt of 1680. He married and was later given a land grant in Jacona where he settled and raised his nine children. Today the Roybals have spread throughout the southwest. One descendant, Pablo Roybal, settled in Penasco. the author bases her book on Penasco and surrounding villages, describing the hardships families endured until the coming of railroads and the improvement of roads and schools. Guided by personal research and listening to the tales of her father, the author details her family's roots with an inspirational and adventurous tale.
