Description
11th Annual Santero Market at San Felipe de Neri Parish is an entertaining and fun filled public event held in Historic Old Town. This year’s market features 40 artists from throughout New Mexico, showcasing primarily traditional Spanish religious art. Additional information is available from the San Felipe de Neri parish office at (505) 243-4628.
In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, a unique form of folk art developed in the American southwest region that is now northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. The "Santero" tradition developed as the need for religious images increased and imported images dwindled, to make due, untrained artists created their own folk style images based on traditional Spanish examples. It is a legacy that today's Santeros strive to continue.
