The long tradition of celebrating at the ABQ BioPark Zoo continues on Sunday, May 12th at 2 p.m. with a performance by the New Mexico Philharmonic that honors mothers of all ages and backgrounds--including the Zoo's own animal moms. The concert is included with regular admission.
What better place to celebrate motherhood than surrounded by the beauty of nature, calls of wild animals, lots of zoo babies and family gathered together to share special moments. The day will also feature hands-on discovery stations for International Migratory Bird Day from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and the World Animal Encounters Show at 11 a.m.
The New Mexico Philharmonic will be led by conductor Stuart Chafetz. Known for his ability to engage audiences with innovative concerts, Chafetz is a conductor increasingly in demand by orchestras nationwide. His guest conducting appearances include the orchestras of Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Edmonton, Florida, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisiana, Naples, New Mexico, San Francisco Ballet, and Virginia. The musicians of the New Mexico Philharmonic will bring their extraordinary musical talents to a performance that features music by Bernstein, Brahms, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and spicy tunes like "Can-Can". Victor Herbert's lively "Royal Sec" will be a toast to all moms!
Mayor Richard J. Berry is a strong supporter of the event and of the New Mexico Philharmonic.
Mayor Richard J. Berry noted, "Mother's Day at the Zoo is a family tradition for many in the Albuquerque area, and the beautiful music enhances the experience. We are pleased that the New Mexico Philharmonic is returning to perform for this great event again this year, and look forward to a fun-filled event to honor moms."
The Mother's Day concert is sponsored by KHFM 95.5 and Park It Place. Lawn seating is available, and a variety of food and drink will be available for purchase. Guests are welcome to bring blankets, picnics and lawn chairs. No glass containers or alcohol of any kind may be brought into the park by visitors.
A free park-and-ride service will be provided from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Park in the Aquarium/Botanic Garden lot at Central and New York Streets, or in the Park It Place lot on the southwest corner of Copper and 6th Streets. Riders just show their zoo receipt to qualify for free parking.
New Mexico Philharmonic will present three additional concerts at the zoo on May 11th, 18th and 25th. For information on those performances, please visit www.nmphil.org or call 505-323-4343.
