Chopper the white rhino calf will turn one year old on Oct. 30, and the zoo is celebrating Chopper's 1st Birthday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Rhino exhibit. Festivities are included with regular admission to the ABQ BioPark Zoo.

Guests can watch Chopper explore special enrichment items and spar with his exhibit mate Bertha. Visit hands-on discovery stations to learn more about white rhinoceroses and sign a giant birthday card. At 1 p.m., one of Chopper's zookeepers will give a short talk and answer questions.

"Chopper has become a great ambassador for rhinos and rhino conservation during the last year as people have come to visit him from around the state," said Lynn Tupa, Zoo Manager. "Although he still drinks two bottles a day, he is growing up quickly. When we weighed him last week, he tipped the scale at 1,570 pounds!"

Zoo guests can usually watch Chopper and his foster mother Bertha in the Africa section of the Zoo. The calf follows the adult female's lead in wallowing and napping in the sun. He joins her to eat hay and grain and often tussles with her as he practices sparring, an important behavior for adults.

Chopper was born at Florida's White Oak Conservation Center. He was not able to establish a strong bond with his mother and was hand reared. Chopper moved to the ABQ BioPark Zoo on November 14, 2012 at 2 weeks old and 169 pounds. Read more about Chopper.

The Zoo's hoofstock keepers will be celebrating another important birthday next week--Moe the hippo turns 40 on November 3. For more information, email [email protected] or dial 311 locally (505-768-2000).
