Welcome to the City of Albuquerque

Apes

These primates don't monkey around! In fact, they're not monkeys at all.

Gorillas, orangutans and siamangs are apes. Apes have long arms, no tails and heavier bodies than their monkey relatives. (The chimpanzees in the nearby Africa exhibit are also apes.)

Most apes are omnivores, eating fruit, vegetables and meat on occasion. Fruit is the favorite food for many species.

Often you can spot what zookeepers call enrichment — boxes, balls, and other toys filled with ripe fruit or other treats — in the ape exhibits. Enrichment encourages natural behaviors like foraging and puzzle solving. Join us on holidays like Easter and Valentine's Day to watch the apes open special enrichment presents.
