News from the ABQ Biopark

BioPark Trains

Enjoy two narrow-gauge trains at the BioPark. Catch the Rio Line to travel between the Zoo and Aquarium/Botanic Garden or ride the Thunderbird Express on a loop through the Zoo.

Rio Line Between Facilities

About the Rio Line and Thunderbird Express

  • Trains usually operate 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesdays-Sundays.
  • No service on Mondays, except Monday holidays (Memorial and Labor Day). No service on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas or New Year's Day.
  • No transfers between the Thunderbird Express and the Rio Line.
  • School groups cannot use the Rio Line between facilities. Please plan to use school buses. School groups may purchase tickets for the Zoo's Thunderbird Express.
  • Trains are wheelchair-accessible.

The Rio Line travels 1.5 miles along the Rio Grande bosque to connect the Aquarium & Botanic Garden with the Zoo.

Tickets

Ride the Rio Line with one of the following tickets:

  • BioPark Combo Ticket--Includes unlimited train rides.
  • BioPark Members - Purchase unlimited trains rides for the day for $2. Available from cashiers at the Zoo or Aquarium entrance, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Train-ride-only tickets are not available.

Stations

  • Zoo's Asia Train Station
  • Aquarium & Botanic Garden Train Station

Schedule

  • Journey between facilities takes 30 minutes; round-trip takes 60 minutes.
  • Spring and Fall - Operates in 30-minute intervals from 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesdays - Sundays.
  • Summer - Operates in 30-minute intervals from 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesdays - Fridays. On Saturdays and Sundays in summer, the Rio Line runs until 4:45 p.m.
  • Winter - Operates in 60-minute intervals from approximately 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays.

 

Thunderbird Express Zoo Train

Thunderbird Express through the Zoo

Ride the Thunderbird Express on a loop through the Zoo. Conductors give a tour and answer questions as the train passes the Africa exhibits, elephants, camels and more.

Catch the Thunderbird Express at the Africa Station.

Tickets

Ride the Thunderbird Express with one of the following tickets:

  • Zoo Train Ticket - Purchase at the "Out of Africa" Gift Shop, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. $2 for adults (13+) and $1 for children (3-12).
  • BioPark Members - Purchase unlimited trains rides for the day for $2. Available from cashiers at the Zoo or Aquarium entrance, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Schedule

  • Journey lasts 20 minutes.
  • Operates at 30-minute intervals from 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays.
  • On summer Saturdays and Sundays, the Thunderbird Express runs until 4:45 p.m.
