March 13, 2013
Anglers of all ages can compete for prizes at Tingley Beach's 7th Annual Free Fishing Derby on Saturday, March 16 from 7:15 a.m. - 4 p.m. Grab your fishing gear, cast a line and reel in one of the 5,000 newly stocked rainbow trout. A New Mexico fishing license is required for everyone 12 years and older.
Meet at the Central Pond to catch tagged trout, there are 200 marked fish, and pick a prize. To receive prizes, tagged trout must be caught on Saturday from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thanks to Parks and Recreation, the first 50 kids (8 and younger) to catch any trout win a Pirates of the Caribbean sleeping bag.
"Our sponsors make the Fishing Derby a fun, friendly contest for adults and kids, so come get some fish," said Joe Martinelli, Interim Curator of Tingley Beach. "New Mexico Game and Fish regularly stocks our ponds, and they're helping us get ready for the big event by bringing thousands of new trout."
The Free Fishing Derby is hosted by the ABQ BioPark, City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department, Charlie's Sporting Goods, Los Pinos Fly & Tackle Shop, Sportsman's Warehouse, Quality Baits and New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Special thanks to our sponsors for offering gift cards and fishing equipment as Derby prizes.
Tingley Beach Café and Convenience will be open and selling food and drink inside the Tingley Station. Fishing licenses are not available for sale at Tingley Beach, but can be purchased from the nearby Kmart on Central Avenue west of the river. No registration is required for this free event.
Tingley Beach will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 15 to prepare for the derby. For more information, email [email protected] or dial 311 locally (505-768-2000).
