People have been making jack-o-lanterns during Halloween for centuries. On October 31, ABQ BioPark Aquarium scuba divers are putting their own twist on the old tradition by making a splash with their pumpkins in the Shark Tank. Visit the Aquarium to watch divers carve pumpkins on Halloween from 2-3 p.m.

“Underwater pumpkin carving is a real challenge and puts divers’ art skills to the test,” said Holly Casman, BioPark Aquarium Manager. “It’s fun to see what they can come up with while stingrays and sharks swim nearby and the pumpkins and carving tools slip and float away.”

Watch sea turtles snack on pumpkin bits and curious fish swim through spooky jack-o-lantern faces. Carved pumpkins will remain in the Shark Tank for the rest of the day for fish and visitors to enjoy.

Divers clean each pumpkin outside the tank before bringing them down to the bottom to decorate. The Aquarium’s first attempt at underwater pumpkin carving was in 2010, and the Halloween celebration quickly caught on with both aquarists and guests.

If you miss the carving demonstration, you can still catch divers feeding fish and cleaning in the Shark Tank every day around 2 p.m. The event is included with admission. For more information, email [email protected] or dial 311 locally (505-768-2000).
