As the start of school approaches, the ABQ BioPark and New Mexico BioPark Society are encouraging NM students entering grades 2-4 to get ready by reading and joining the Reading Animal program. Summer reading challenge participants may be eligible to win a day as a BioPark Zookeeper or an all-expenses paid trip to Disney's Animal Kingdom! The challenge deadline is August 1. Readers and their parents can download the full rules and reading log from the NM Reads to Lead website (http://www.readingchallenge.ped.state.nm.us/).

The City of Albuquerque is one of several partners in this effort by Governor Martinez and the Public Education Department to stop the "summer slide," when students lose some of their reading proficiency during the summer months and must catch up when they return to school in August.

"The New Mexico BioPark Society supports educational programs just like this through its support of the ABQ BioPark," said Julie Miller Rugg, the society's executive director. "We are excited to participate in this statewide program and to encourage students across New Mexico to continue to learn during the summer months."

Students can download a reading log (pdf) to print at home or pick one up from the front desk at the Zoo. Reading logs can be returned by mail or in person at the Zoo. Children are eligible to participate if they live in New Mexico and are entering the 2nd, 3rd or 4th grade for the 2013/2014 school year or are 7 to 10 years of age.

Readers of all ages might enjoy the children's book suggestions from BioPark staff at www.readinganimal.com and our weekly Story Time on Thursdays at the Zoo and Fridays at the Botanic Garden at 10:30 a.m.

All entrants who complete the basic "Reading Bug" level receive a bookmark and coupon for free animal crackers from the Zoo. Those who complete the requirements for the "Reading Animal" level will receive a free child's admission to the Zoo and be entered to win the big prizes!

In a random drawing, four readers will win a day as a BioPark Zookeeper and one reader will win all-expenses paid family trip to Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL. The grand prize trip is sponsored by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and the ABQ Hispano Chamber of Commerce. The NM BioPark Society's Reading Animal bookmarks are sponsored by Intel.
