Update: This year's walk is booked to capacity and "sold" out. Please plan to join us next year! (2/14/14)

Grab your binoculars and head to the Great Backyard Bird Count at the Botanic Garden on February 15 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m., when ABQ BioPark Education hosts an expert-led bird walk. No admission is required, but you must sign-up in advance by calling 505-848-7180.

Renowned birder and author Judy Liddell from Central New Mexico Audubon leads the tour. BioPark volunteers will also help with bird identification and provide bird-spotting checklists. The results of the count go to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to be compiled with data from around the world.

“You can experience the gardens in a different way by looking for what is in the trees and on the ground and observing what the birds are doing,” said Tallie Segel, Botanic Garden Education Coordinator. “This event really highlights the diversity of life that the Botanic Garden supports.”

Every year in February, thousands of birders of all ages and levels across the globe participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count. This citizen science project provides “a real-time snapshot” of where bird species are. Participants simply watch birds at any location for at least 15 minutes and report online at www.BirdCount.org. Gathering the data is fun and helps the scientific community gain important insight into shifts in bird populations from year to year, migration timing, and population response to land development and climate change.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society. No admission is required to participate in the Botanic Garden’s event, but you must reserve your spot by Friday, Feb. 14. Please RSVP by calling ABQ BioPark Education at 505-848-7180.
