A lasting tribute to a fish once found in the Rio Grande.

With clear skies and warm weather, it’s the perfect time to head out to Tingley Beach for fishing, picnics and outdoor recreation. Gar Bender greets you with his catch of a lifetime, perhaps an indication of how anglers will fair at Tingley’s ponds.
Made from welded steel, Gar Bender depicts a man holding a large garfish over his head. Joe Barrington, sculptor at Red Star Studio in Texas, created the piece in 1996. The Albuquerque Public Art Program added the sculpture to the City’s art collection and found a home for it at Tingley Beach.
This weekend, on March 16, Gar Bender and the ABQ BioPark invite you to catch your own big fish at the 7th Annual Free Fishing Derby. Cast your line out at Tingley Beach and enjoy the beautiful bosque and artwork from sunrise to sunset (derby lasts from 7:15 a.m. – 4 p.m.).
