Newborn Giraffe Calf Dies

ABQ BioPark staff mourning loss of calf.

05/19/2017 - The ABQ BioPark Zoo is mourning the loss of a newborn giraffe born early Wednesday morning to Niara. This was Niara's first pregnancy.

The male calf was born early on May 17, but veterinary staff immediately noticed the calf was not healthy when he failed to stand quickly as healthy newborn giraffes usually do. Staff worked to warm and bottle feed him. He was monitored and cared for around the clock. The baby was diagnosed as having a dislocated hip, and would be unable to walk. BioPark staff took many quick and extraordinary steps to help the calf. The calf was fully stabilized prior to trying to re-position the leg on Thursday. During the procedure, it was determined that the leg was not going to stay in place, and therefore the calf would never have been able to walk. To avoid any continued discomfort, he was euthanized late Thursday.
"This is truly sad news for our giraffe family and the dedicated team of professionals who care for them," said Dr. Baird Fleming, deputy chief executive of the ABQ BioPark.
The ABQ BioPark Zoo currently has two other pregnant giraffes.
