Bread is Bad (For Ducks)

Oats, grapes better choices for ABQ BioPark waterfowl.

08/28/2017 - Bread remains a staple item for many people who enjoy feeding ducks and geese at the ABQ BioPark, but it's not healthy for these waterfowl or the ponds they swim in.

"Bread is not only bad for ducks and geese, but it also contaminates the water in our boat pond," said Kathy Lang, ABQ BioPark Curator of Tingley Beach. This goes for the waterfowl at the Zoo and Botanic Garden as well.

The ABQ BioPark will host a Bread Amnesty Day to raise awareness of the issue and get some healthier bird food into visitors' hands. The event will occur from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. September 2-4, 2017, at the Tingley Beach boat pond.

"During our Bread Amnesty Day, we'll take your bread, pretzels, popcorn, Cheetos and other unhealthy foods and trade them for waterfowl-friendly pellets and grains," said Lang.

The event will also feature educational materials about why bread is bad for birds and water quality.
