04/05/2017 - The ABQ BioPark Aquarium is selling its model ship collection so that construction can begin on the new North American river otter exhibit.

Nautical artifacts, including a ship's wheel, wooden and glass buoys, flags and a lobster trap, will also be sold. All proceeds fund educational components of the new otter exhibit.

The ten ships available for purchase range in price from the $175 Golden Hind to the $1,000 museum-quality USS Hartford. Most of the ships are scale replicas of historical vessels. The ships can be viewed and purchased on the New Mexico BioPark Society's website.

Because the ships are very delicate, the BioPark Society requests that buyers pick up their purchases directly from the Aquarium. Shipping can be arranged at the buyer's expense.

"We've loved telling the stories of historic ocean vessels and the art of model ship-making, but we're also excited to welcome otters to the Aquarium," said Holly Casman, Aquarium manager. "These ships will be a fantastic addition to any hobbyist's collection."

The area currently occupied by the model ships will be transformed into an underwater viewing area for the new otter exhibit. Interactive screens and displays will reveal the behavior, natural history and conservation status of North American river otters.
