2018 Excitement: Events, Exhibits at ABQ BioPark

Penguins, otters, and new education events top the list.

January 3, 2018 - It’s a new year and there’s a lot to get excited about at the ABQ BioPark. Here are just some of the things to look forward to in 2018.

River Otters

Come say hi to female river otters Chaos and Mayhem at the Aquarium. The exhibit will have interactive features highlighting otter diets, physical characteristics and conservation of this New Mexico native species, which once vanished from the Rio Grande but has been since reintroduced. Deck and underwater viewing options will give visitors a unique look into otter behavior. The habitat is scheduled to open this spring.

Penguins

The wait is almost over! Three penguin species—gentoo, macaroni and king—will march into the Zoo this spring. Visitors will go on a journey to the Southern Hemisphere to learn about all 18 penguin species, conservation challenges, amazing adaptations and more. There will also be interactive exhibits for adults and children alike, and opportunities for underwater viewing of the world’s fastest swimming penguin—the gentoo clocks in at 22 miles per hour! The habitat is scheduled to open this spring.

New Education Events

The ABQ BioPark education department has dozens of educational events planned for 2018, from Aquarium Overnights to conservation awareness events throughout the facilities. Brand new additions this year include World Lizard Day at the Zoo and National Jelly Day at the Aquarium.
