Miniature Trains and Fun Roll Into Botanic Garden
May 30, 2013
All aboard! Come to the Botanic Garden on May 31-June 2 for the Backyard Garden Train Show, an imaginative presentation of miniature trains and landscapes. New Mexico Garden Railroaders Club (NMGRR) members will help guests bring their backyard gardens to life with G-scale trains and complimentary scenery.
The show takes place from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. all three days at the Railroad Garden and in two demonstration areas near the pond (under the tent and in the shady plaza in front of the conservatories). It is included with regular admission.
“Miniature trains bring out the inner child in everyone that visits these wonderful displays,” said Jon Stewart, Curator of Plants. “It’s fun to use your imagination to create and explore these small worlds. From the plant side, we enjoy featuring specimens that are small by nature and others that we miniaturize through the way we grow them.”
In the Railroad Garden, children can push buttons to run trains on three different interactive loops and the main lines will feature long multi-car trains. In the demonstration areas, volunteers will run up to six more trains, including live steam engines. Several trains feature well-known characters from cartoons and movies.
With over 200 years of combined experience, members of the NMGRR know G-scale model trains. The Club helped create and continues to help maintain the year-round Railroad Garden exhibit at the Botanic Garden. They also bring in special trains and set up additional tracks for this terrific train weekend. For more information, email [email protected] or dial 311 locally (505-768-2000).
