April 29, 2013
The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden and the New Mexico Orchid Guild host the Orchid Seduction Show May 3-5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. With regular admission, Garden guests can enjoy hundreds of orchids on display and for sale.
Show highlights include a juried art show in Shark Reef Café and orchid art and educational displays in the Education Building. At 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, children can visit the Spanish-Moorish Garden to plant an orchid in a milk jug greenhouse to take home (supplies limited to first 50 children). At 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, guests can attend the Repotting Orchids Demonstration by Steve Fischer in the Spanish-Moorish Garden.
"The New Mexico Orchid Guild has a fantastic show planned this year, as always," said Catherine Hubbard, Botanic Garden Manager. "With the theme of Orchid Seduction, the show promises to delight orchid enthusiasts and newcomers alike with color and beauty."
Orchids and floral arrangements will be judged by the American Orchid Society, and winning entries will be on display. Visitors will also be able to vote for their favorite for the People's Choice Award.
A special opening night Orchid Seduction Reception on Friday, May 3 at 5:30 p.m. will feature a talk from orchid expert Carol Siegel, a champagne tasting and a strolling meal inspired by aphrodisiacs. Siegel's talk, Liar and Cheats: The Story of Orchid Deception, illustrates how orchids will stop at nothing to get pollinated. Seating is limited and tickets, $35, must be purchased by 5 p.m. today from www.nmog.org or by calling 505-848-7123.
