The Backyard Garden Train Show returns to the ABQ BioPark March 28-30. In addition to seeing spring flowers, Botanic Garden guests will hear lots of clickety-clacks, whoo-whoos, and delighted shouts of “Here comes the train!”
The New Mexico Garden Railroaders Club (NMGRR) will create special layouts, run collectible trains and inspire guests to bring their backyard gardens to life with G-scale trains and miniature scenery. The show takes place from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Sunday. Look for displays at the Railroad Garden and inside the Ceremonial Garden and Spanish-Moorish Garden. The show is included with regular admission.
“The Railroad Garden is a favorite exhibit for many kids, and kids-at-heart,” said Catherine Hubbard, Botanic Garden Manager. “We enjoy seeing how the trains bring the garden and its scenes, complete with miniature plantings, to life for our guests. During the spring train show, the Garden Railroaders really pull out all the stops with extra displays and trains.”
In the Railroad Garden, children can push buttons to run trains on interactive loops, and the main lines will feature long multi-car trains (video). In the demonstration areas, volunteers will run up to six more trains, including live steam engines and well-known character trains.
With over 200 years of combined experience, members of the NMGRR know G-scale model trains. The Club helped create and continues to help maintain the year-round Railroad Garden exhibit at the Botanic Garden. They bring in special trains and set up additional tracks for annual train shows each spring and fall.
