Presented by the Albuquerque Aril and Iris Society, the Botanic Garden's newest flower show, Iris Fiesta, features early-blooming iris. The show starts as our Earth Day celebration and Children's Seed Festival end.

Enjoy beautiful aril irises, arilbred hybrids and smaller bearded iris in the Heritage Farmhouse. Society members will display the award winners and other entries in the show from 1 - 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday. Members will share their favorite blooms and talk with guests about growing irises.

More about Arils

Arils are several species of iris native to the mountainous areas of the Near East, extending from Turkey and Israel to the Russian Caucasus.  Pure aril species are difficult to grow in the New Mexico climate, but arils cross readily with other iris species, producing hybrids that adapt better to our growing conditions.

Arils and arilbreds tend to bloom earlier than the more familiar tall bearded iris species, and that is the reason that the club has two iris shows each year. The show at the Botanic Garden is in late April when the Arils are in full bloom (if the weather cooperates). Also featured are the smaller “Table” or “Lilliput” bearded hybrids, which often display more interesting colors and markings than can be seen in the more familiar tall bearded iris.

The second show, traditionally held at the Albuquerque Garden Center on Mother’s Day weekend, features the familiar bearded iris and species iris.
