“S. A. Andrée’s Balloon Expedition to the North Pole”
The 1897 Andrée polar expedition was an attempt to be the first to reach the North Pole – in a balloon! The expedition members documented their journey in diaries and photographs taken with a prototype to the Hasselblad camera. The film rolls were found in the team’s final camp on White Island and were successfully developed 33 years later. This discussion uses these unique photos taken before, during and after the flight to tell the story of the expedition and the fate of its participants.
