Play: Lady in the Light
Lady in the Light: Stepping into Ginger's Heels is a multi–media production showcasing the theatrical life of Ginger Rogers, an icon of dance, film and fashion. Famous for her pairing with Fred Astaire in over nine films featuring their dynamic dance skills and choreography, Ginger Rogers grappled with recognition for her work and contributions over an astoundingly rich performance career spanning over fifty years. She made her mark as a dramatic actress in the 1944 film “Lady in The Dark” that takes a psychological view of Liza Elliott, a woman at the top of her game as an executive and editor at a leading fashion magazine. However, Liza never received the recognition of an Anna Wintour for she worked in an age where women were still seen as threats and underlings within a male dominated world. Such was the world of Roger’s Hollywood. Through film, original choreography, music and song, oral history, and storytelling, we take a look at a most fashionably strong female artist.
Lady in the Light stars Wendy Leverenz Barker and Nate Warren. The piece is created and directed by Laurie Thomas with choreography by Wendy Leverenz Barker, and is presented in conjunction with the Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe exhibition.
