Memorial Service for Two Homeless Men
President Ben Shelly from the Navajo Nation has been invited to attend. Local and Native American religious clergy have been asked to participate in a blessing of the site in honor of the victims, Mr. Allison Gorman and Mr. Kee Thompson.
Councilor Pena and Rod Mahoney, President of the West Central Community Development Group will be collecting food to be distributed to the Rio Grande Food Project and the Albuquerque Indian Center. The public and local elected officials are invited to participate in the memorial service and to donate non-perishable food items.
Councilor Peña extends her condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gorman and Mr. Thompson. This tragedy highlights the importance of coming together as a community to resolve the issues of homelessness, mental health and substance abuse that plague our community.
In addition, she along with Mr. Mahoney ask that National Night Out on August 5th be used as an opportunity for neighbors to collect food to donate to the Roadrunner Food Bank and to have discussions on how to help the most vulnerable in our communities.
After the DOJ report in April, Councilor Peña immediately highlighted the mental health crisis in our City. She recently sponsored a resolution to fund an “Essential Services Study” that will help determine the gaps in services.
