Neighborhoods and businesses along Rio Grande Boulevard will be interested to hear that the City of Albuquerque has contracted with Bohannan-Houston, Inc., an Albuquerque engineering firm, to design and engineer a roundabout at the intersection of Rio Grande Boulevard and Candelaria Road. The roundabout design will analyze vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle movements and potential landscaping schemes. At the request of City Councilor Debbie O’Malley, the contractor will study changes in noise levels at the intersection.

Funding to design and construct the roundabout has been made available through the New Mexico Department of Transportation using Federal Safety funds and a match from the City of Albuquerque. This project is one of the few safety projects in the state that was awarded the full amount of funding requested by an applicant. To view a set of models of how the Roundabout will improve safety and reduce congestion at the intersection as compared to a traffic signal.

As required by both federal funding regulations and City Practice the design process will require extensive public input. The first public meeting for the round about design is planned for mid-2011. We hope to have your participation at these public meetings.
