Councilor Diane Gibson is serving her first term as City Councilor, representing District 7. Councilor Gibson moved to New Mexico in 1975. She, like many other transplants, fell in love with the beauty and culture here.
She retired from Sandia National Laboratory in 2008 where she began her career as a prototype machinist, at that time only the third woman hired into the apprenticeship program. The last eleven years Councilor Gibson worked as an Environment, Safety, Security and Health coordinator, ensuring a safe, environmentally responsible workplace for over 200 employees.
Councilor Gibson was born and raised in Detroit to working class parents who worked hard and highly valued education. Her family now lives in Colorado where she frequently visits.
As the former owner and manager of rental real estate, Diane understands the important contribution locally owned businesses make in Albuquerque’s economy. And as a union member for over 20 years, Councilor Gibson will always defend organized labor and collective bargaining. For the past nine years she has professionally prepared income taxes for small business owners and individuals which has given her an intimate perspective into the everyday hardships the people in Albuquerque encounter. Councilor Gibson's passion for protecting the rights of the elderly and disabled led her to her position as a volunteer ombudsman in a local long-term care facility. She has committed herself to improving her own neighborhood and those throughout District 7 since moving to the Jerry Cline Park neighborhood ten years ago.
