City Councilor Dan Lewis Unanimously Elected as the Chairman of the Committee of the Whole for 2012

At the City Council meeting on Monday, December 19th, Councilor Lewis was unanimously elected as the chairman of the Committee of the Whole. The Committee of the Whole, which consists of all nine Councilors acting as a Committee, takes the lead in evaluating the City’s almost one billion dollar operating budget and the ten year capital improvements program. In addition, the Committee of the Whole meets with the Mayor, and/or the Mayor’s representative, prior to the Mayor’s preparation of the annual City budget, to review and make recommendations about the priority of programs within City government, and the ranking and implementation of policy priorities in the budget process.

This year, the Committee of the Whole will also review and make recommendations regarding redistricting the Council Districts based on information from the Federal Census and recommendations from the Redistricting Committee. “With the tremendous growth on the West Side of Albuquerque our objective is to ensure that all of Albuquerque’s citizens, especially those on the West Side, have equal representation on the City Council” said Councilor Lewis.

“We have some tough decisions ahead of us as we ensure fair representation for each of the nine districts and implement a balanced budget during the budget process. As Chairman, I am honored to help lead those efforts.”

The first Committee of the Whole meeting of the year is expected to take place mid-January. The budget process begins in April.
