Cadigan to Introduce Bill Banning the Use of Public Campaign Funds for Alcohol Purchases

Councilor Michael Cadigan will introduce an ordinance at the next regularly scheduled Council meeting prohibiting the use of public campaign funds for the purchase of alcoholic beverages.

Recently, the City Clerk issued a statement lifting the ban on using public campaign funds to purchase alcohol. The City Clerk stated in an Albuquerque Journal article that since the Open and Ethical Elections Code makes no mention of alcohol then the city cannot enact a ban. Cadigan’s bill would unequivocally ban the use of public campaign funds to purchase alcohol.

Cadigan adds, “Taxpayer money should not be used to pay for alcoholic beverages. There is absolutely no need to provide alcohol at campaign events.”
