The Barelas Community Center is one of the oldest Community Centers in Albuquerque. It was built in 1941-42, in Pueblo Revival style, for the National Youth Administration, by youth receiving "on-the-job training." The Center has a gymnasium, weight room, ceramics room and computer lab.

Center Hours

  • Regular Hours: M-Th, 7 am-8 pm; Friday, 7 am-6 pm

Youth Programs

  • Before School Program: M-F, 7am-8am. Limit is 30.
  • After School Program: M-F, 3-6pm. Limit is 100.
  • Snack Program for participants 1-17yrs.: M-F, 3-3:15pm.
  • Barelas Learning Center via the Albuquerque Community Schools Project/Literacy Program: M-F, 3-6pm; enrollment required; contact Denis Aragon at 848-1343 in the afternoon.
  • Albuquerque Home School Science Club: Monday, 10am-12pm.

Adult Programs

  • Open Gym: M-F, 12pm-1pm; M/W, 6pm-8pm.
  • Wheel Chair Basketball: M/W, 5:30pm-6:30pm.
  • Weight Room: M-Th, 7am-8pm; Friday, 7am-6pm; You must be 18 years of age or older, and have signed a waiver form to work out.
  • Women's Ceramic Club: M-F, 8am-12 noon.
  • Aztec Dancers: T/Th, 6pm-8pm.
  • Open Computer Lab: M-F, 7am-2pm.

Community Meetings

  • Barelas Neighborhood Association: Last Wednesday of each month, 6pm-8pm. Please refer to http://www.barelas.org for more information on how to get on their agenda.

Special Event

  • Barelas CC and UNM Research Service Learning Program have teamed up to study its role in the community. This is a two-semester program for undergraduates under the heading ANTH 340.008, Anthropology Annex 120 & the Barelas Community Center.
