What is the Responsibility of the Chief Administrative Officer and the CAO Office?
Appointment of the Chief Administrative Officer
City Charter, Article V. Mayor; Section 4. Duties of the Mayor; (d) – Requires the Mayor to appoint, with the advice and consent of the Council, the Chief Administrative Officer and deputy administrative officers.
Among the duties of the Chief Administrative Officer is the duty to supervise the operations of all departments; however, in performing this duty, the Chief Administrative Officer is subject to the authority of the Mayor. The Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for the enforcement, supervision and administrative control over the Merit System Ordinance. In addition, the Mayor may prescribe other duties for the Chief Administrative Officer to perform which are not inconsistent with the provisions of the Charter.
Responsibilities of the CAO’s Office
The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer is responsible for the day to day operations of the City of Albuquerque’s Executive Branch. The CAO Office handles records requests for the Office of the Mayor/CAO, legislative bills, special waiver/fee reduction requests, Personnel Board appeals, Police Oversight appeals, contracts, recommendation for hires and the Executive and Administrative Instructions.
