Thanks For Not Smoking
Recently, Mayor Chávez took a large step toward promoting the health of Albuquerque citizens.
With an Executive Order (PDF) banning smoking on City property the Mayor is providing Albuquerque with healthy recreation areas free from smoke.
Where are smoke-free zones?
The smoking ban will be seen in:
- All City parks
- All City property
- City vehicles
- Harry E. Kinney Civic Plaza
- Albuquerque Sunport
The smoking ban does not apply to:
- City Golf Courses
- Sidewalks

- Presbyterian health care recipients can call the Tobacco Quit Line at 1-888-840-5445.
- Cigna health care recipients can call 1-866-417- QUIT (7848).
- City employees can receive additional packages to help quit through their individual service providers.
When does the Albuquerque smoking ban start?
The smoking ban will be implemented on June 15 -- the same day as a separate State of NM ordinance addressing smoking with private businesses, bars, and restaurants.
Please note, the policy does not stop smoking on sidewalks or private property.

In support for the health of Albuquerque citizens, Mayor Chávez stated, “The second leading preventable cause of death in New Mexico is smoking. This includes the health risks associated with second-hand smoke inhalation. This is just another step to help people kick the habit.”
