Winter Wool Festival Returns to the ABQ BioPark

El Arco Iris: Sociedad de Colcherasembroider traditional New Mexican pieces using wool threads in the Farmhouse at the Heritage Farm.

Discover the roots of modern cloth by attending the Winter Wool Festival, Saturday February 25 at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., enjoy hands-on demonstrations of the fiber arts including spinning, dyeing, quilting, rug hooking, traditional colcha embroidery and much more.

Watch experienced artisans at work, learn about natural dyes made from plants and follow the process used to turn fleece from fiber animals (and plants) into sweaters and blankets.  Visit Discovery Stations at the Animal Barn to learn more about fiber animals from both the BioPark and around the world. Learn to card and spin fleece, practice weaving on a table loom and make your own weaving to take home. Then enjoy the upbeat tempos of the Eastside Ramblers at the Farmhouse porch from 11a.m. - 1 p.m.

"Our community has a vibrant history in the fiber arts," said Kathryn Venzor, BioPark Education Curator. "Visitors to the Winter Wool Festival will see how these traditions and practices are still alive and thriving, while also learning more about the connection between people, plants and animals at our Discovery Stations."

For more information, call BioPark education at (505)-848-7180. Winter Wool Festival is included with regular admission.
