A sneak peek at the BioPark's future Bugarium!

The Fantastic World of Bugs is a temporary preview of what visitors will experience in the future Bugarium. The Conservatory's canyon is full of exhibits featuring millipedes, tarantulas, leaf insects, roaches, scorpions and more! You may also spot the web of one of the orb-weaving spiders free-living in the Conservatory.

Where: Botanic Garden Mediterranean Conservatory.

When: Open daily, 9am-5pm.

Cost: Included with admission.

The Future Bugarium

Now in design, the Bugarium will engross you in the fascinating lives of arthropods. The complex will feature open-air displays, hidden barriers and natural habitats.  Everyone, people and bugs, will be safe in the carefully-planned exhibits.

Rearing Facility (completed)

  • Holding area for education outreach animals.
  • Offices, a lab and kitchen
  • Animal rearing and testing of new ideas by staff.

Bug World (next phase)

  • Showcases arthropods from around the world.
  • Naturalistic enclosures, unseen barriers.
  • Free-ranging animals.
  • Mixed-species exhibits and nocturnal area.
  • Pond with underwater viewing.

Dragonfly Sanctuary Pond (next phase)

  • Designed for native dragonflies and damselflies.
  • No insecticide use and no large fish predators.
  • Unique views from a boardwalk over the pond.

Native Garden and Entry Arch (next phase)

  • Artwork on arch depicts arthropod diversity.
  • Native plantings and free-ranging native bugs.
  • Giant sculpture of a tarantula hawk wasp (NM’s state insect) with its prey, a tarantula.

Tropical Butterfly House (final phase)

  • Waterfall feature anchors the exhibit.
  • Total immersion experience, open year-round.
  • Hundreds of tropical butterflies, giant helicopter damselflies and other exotic insects.
