Application for Time Extension

By following these instructions carefully, we can expedite your request for a time extension for vehicle registration. Please review the instructions that follow and at the bottom of this page you will be able to download the required forms.

A one-year time extension will be issued when the affidavit of vehicle unavailability and V.I.N. inspection are submitted to our office. If you are in an emissions testing area, you are required to have your vehicle tested in that area. (Affidavit of V.I.N. Inspection not required if valid emission test is submitted). Send the original test results and the affidavit of vehicle unavailability to this office. A two-year time extension will be honored. It is necessary to include the address where the vehicle is located and a telephone number. This form must be signed and notarized (notary not required if valid emission test is submitted).The Affidavit of V.I.N. Inspection must be completed and signed by a Motor Vehicle Department agent, Law Enforcement Officer or Military/Campus Police as proof of vehicle unavailability.

Mail or fax to (505) 764-1101 the completed affidavit(s) and/or emission certificate and a copy of the Vehicle Registration or Title to:

Mail the completed affidavit(s) and/or emission test, the registration renewal notice, proof of insurance and the registration fee (check made out to New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department (MVD)) to our office in Albuquerque. We will process a certificate acceptable to Motor Vehicle Department and will forward your renewal packet to them. Motor Vehicle Department will then send your registration sticker to your New Mexico address of record. If you prefer delivery to an out-of-state address, you must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. If your registration has expired you should include a $10 late fee and any other late fees required by MVD. Please call us at (505) 764-1110 if you have any questions.
