Group Night Volunteer Opportunities
Children's Grief Center of New Mexico
- Supplying Light Dinners
Grieving families often need help to accomplish everyday tasks. To make it easier for the children and their families to attend groups, the Children’s Grief Center provides a free dinner at 5:30 p.m. Volunteers or volunteer organizations provide the pizza, lasagna, enchiladas, etc. for anywhere between 50 - 100 children and their caregivers. Please contact us to learn when and where dinners are needed in Albuquerque. All donations are tax deductible and sponsors/volunteers help to serve the meals!
- Family Greeters
For 30 minutes prior to the beginning of our support groups, we need a few friendly faces to volunteer as Family Greeters. Family Greeters greet the families that are attending support group at the Children’s Grief Center, help to set up and serve a light meal, and then help to clean up afterward. All the time that is required is a little over one hour on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights, every-other-week throughout the school year.
- Volunteer Support Group Facilitators
Volunteer Support Group Facilitators are the backbone of our program. They lead grief support groups for children, teens, or adults, either on the West Side or in the North Valley. Facilitators are trained, teamed up with more experienced facilitators, and supported by our staff. Facilitators come from all walks of life, and are not required to have any experience in support groups or counseling. As one of our volunteers wrote, “This is the most rewarding thing I do.” The time commitment is approximately 3.5 hours one evening every other week for 1 year, plus 16 hours of training (Next training date will be January 11th & 18th, 2014).
- Childcare Providers:
Two Childcare Providers are needed for each group night. Childcare Providers meet families @5:45 p.m. and take children ages 24 months – 4 years to an assigned room or outside to play and care for them until group ends at 7:15 p.m. (Needed Tues. or Wed. nights in North Valley and Thurs. nights in Rio Rancho, every other week throughout the year.) Childcare providers must pass a criminal background check.
The success of the Children’s Grief Center of New Mexico depends on the very special people who volunteer. Come and explore the transformative experience of volunteering to support grieving children and their families! PLEASE help us spread the word! We want to help as many children as possible. Please pass this information on to your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers.
