Develop an App using the City of Albuquerque's data sets which are available online for free. Be innovative, creative, and help your community.

A total of $30,000 in prize money will be shared among competition winners. Mayor Berry will grant awards in the following categories:

  • Most innovative mobile application for City of Albuquerque cultural resources
  • Most innovative mobile application for doing business in the City
  • Most innovative mobile application for outdoor fun & healthy living

The City reserves the right to give additional awards for particularly innovative apps in other areas as well.

App Platforms

Apps can be built for any electronic platform with internet capabilities. Build one for a smart phone, tablet, laptop, or other mobile device. The choice is yours.

Judging will not be based on the platform you choose.

Be Inspired

Use inspiration from the public to develop your app. Over the summer, we asked the public for ideas of the kinds of apps they would like to use. We received lots of great ideas.

  • Several people recommended library information, including hours and locations, available books, and programming.
  • We received other suggestions about providing recreation information related to bicycling, trails and open space, and wildlife.
  • Cultural and educational topics proved popular, too. We received suggestions for data about museums, filming locations, public art, and the BioPark.

You must use at least one dataset from ABQ Data. You may also integrate multiple City datasets or include data from other sources. Be creative and innovative. Do something that no one else is doing!

Anyone over age 13 who lives within Albuquerque or is student at a school within Albuquerque may submit an app. You can enter individually or as part of a team. There is no limit to team size, but any prizes awarded to a team will be split evenly among all the team members.

Anyone who is an employee with the City of Albuquerque is not eligible for an award. Any spouse, domestic partner, child, or step child of a City of Albuquerque employee is not eligible for an award. Current contractors with the City of Albuquerque are also not eligible.

Submissions for the Apps Competition open on Aug. 24, 2012 at 2 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time. Applications close precisely at 5 p.m. MDT on Dec. 3, 2012.
